Session structure

There are 2 drawing sessions split by a short break. We start at 7pm and run for 2 hours, with a 15 minute break in-between. The venue closes to the public at 8pm, later customers will be allowed in.

The first half runs for an hour, and is made up of gestures, short and medium length poses. (90 seconds, 5 minutes, 10 minutes)

The second half runs for forty-five minutes, and the number of poses is determined by the artists attending. Generally the poses will be three 15 minutes, or a 20 and 25 minute pose, and occasionally we have one 45 minute pose (rarely).

Pose breakdown

First 1x10 min, 5x1.5 min, 3x5 min, 2x10 min
Second 3x15 min OR 1x20 min, 1x25min

Half-time interval

During the break customers pay for the class, either by card or cash. Light refreshments are served, along with tea/coffee, we use this break to chat with each other, and the model, and look at what other artists are up to. This is a great opportunity for less experienced artists to solicit advice and tips from the veterans.

Materials included each session

  • A2 paper (recycled and standard bond)
  • A3 black and standard bond paper
  • Selection of charcoal sticks
  • Assorted pencils from HB to 6B
  • Pencil sharpeners (of course)
  • Firm and kneadable erasers (limited)
  • Wooden easels (on request)
  • A2 drawing board and clips

Drawing environment

The drawing hall is huge, with high ceilings, central heating and air conditioning, that way both the model and the artist are comfortable all year round.

Lighting setup

The lighting is fantastic, good general illumination ensures you see hue correctly (if you are painting). In addition to the house lights we have a high luminosity spot light, which casts gorgeous shadows. This lamp is set three meters up, which prevents glare and/or blinding. I do love classes that offer good lighting.

Music to draw by

We do play music thought the evening, it is an eclectic mix of classical, rock, pop and contemporary musicians. Our playlist is run on random shuffle, and has a strange tendency to compliment the mood. Uncanny (as my nan would say).
